.The Scarborough and Whitby railway survives as a trailway which at least has preserved much of the right of way, details at http://www.northyorks.gov.uk, and what a fabulous trailway it is. Sadly an atempt to preserve the line in the 1960's failed, it would have had everything, large tourist destinations at either end, pretty wayside destinations, gorgeous scenery and for the serious enthusiast very tough gradients, although it would have been hugely expensive to operate and possibly rather too long for a heritage line. Fortunately the nearby NYMR is very special in its own right. Click on the sound icon for a recording of BR standard 4, 80135 on 31/08/1988 climbing through Darnholme on the NYMR in a thunderstorm with 7 on, at least this gives an impression of what steam must have sounded like toiling up the banks on the Scarborough and Whitby.
In winter with sea mist and damp rails the climbs would have been quite a battle even the downhill would have been fun, judging the station stops would not have been for the faint hearted.
