Crediton Station. Originally the terminus of the Bristol & Exeter Railway and Broad Gauge, the line was
taken over by the London & South Western Railway when they started their route over the moors to Plymouth. 24/07/2009

Huddersfield in the late 1890's. To Leeds is at the top of the map and the Manchester lines go into
Huddersfield Tunnels at the bottom. The map gives a good impression of how large the Goods Shed is.

In steam days stations were very noisy at times especially the likes of Liverpool Lime St and Glasgow Queen St where there was a serious gradient at the end of the platforms so locos had to be worked hard from the guards whistle. Huddersfield Station is a third of the way up a 12 mile climb from Mirfield to Standege Tunnel under the Pennines, while the climb is mainly in 3 figures so it can't be classed as severe but it is long and would have been very hard work for the fireman and a stop at Huddersfield would have been very welcome not that the fireman would have had a break he would have used the time to build his fire up for the slog up to Standedge. To give you an idea of how noisy stations could be click on the Sound icon to hear a short excerpt of British Railway's Standard Class4 2-6-0 76079 departing for Manchester on 19/01/2002, the climb from the station through the tunnels is mostly 1:96 and with a driver like this the fireman would have been kept very busy indeed.

Late 1890's map of Leeds. City Station is called New Station. City Station is the only railway in use today
on this map, very little of the rest remain other than the viaduct's.The western approaches to Leeds were all on viaduct's.

was a joint London & North Western and North Eastern Railway affair. Like so many
places Leeds had a very complicated history and I have only scratched the surface. 30/07/2009

Late 1890's map of Bradford Exchange. Today's Interchange Station is located to the right of Bridge St Goods in the V of the
roads, everything else has disappeared, such unbelievable short sightedness. Goods Yard's in the centre of cities perfect to help
relieve the congestion on the roads. Unfortunately the powers that be are only interested in today and making money they are incapable
of looking even a short distance into the future what an earth do they think the roads will be like in 10-20 years time let alone longer term.

Looking up the 1:50 climb out of Bradford. The start from the modern Interchange Station is 1:50 from
the end of the platform but the old Exchange Station was sited a few hundred yards nearer the city so trains
had a short run at the bank. What a place to have witnessed steam, all of the heavier trains would have been
banked, the sound of a Fairburn tank blasting through the cavernous train shed's would have been a sound never forgotten.
