Underbridge West of Severn Bridge Station, with the estuary through the trees.

19/10/2012

Very attractive Underbridge West of Severn Bridge Station.

Severn Bridge

19/10/2012

Down platform at Severn Bridge Station, hard to believe that you used to have a clear view of the estuary and Bridge from here.

19/10/2012

Up platform at Severn Bridge Station, I presume the various piles of cut rocks lying around are the remains of the approach Viaduct to the Bridge.

Severn Bridge Tunnel Eastern Portal.

19/10/2012

Severn Bridge Tunnel Western Portal. A little wet at this end.

Severn Bridge Tunnel Western Portal.

19/10/2012

Severn Bridge Tunnel Western Portal. I am sure there is a good reason why the date stone, 1878, is only on one Portal!

1900 Trackplan of Lydney Town Station. The present day DFR Station is to the left of the Carriage Shed.

19/10/2012

The DFR's new Lydney Town Station, slightly south of the original. Full marks to the Railway for maintaining the company style of architecture at most of their Stations.

19/10/2012

I don't think this crane will be used any time soon, Lydney St Marys Station. St Marys Station was the original southern terminus of the DFR.

19/10/2012

Lydney St Marys Station. The footbridge is obviously pre preservation, but unfortunately closed now.

1898 Trackplan of Lydney Junction showing how extensive the site once was.

19/10/2012

Lydney Junction Signal Box, orignally sited at Heysham Harbour. The Loco Shed was off to the left behind the Tarpaulined stock.

19/10/2012

The present day DFR Lydney Junction Station.

19/10/2012

Lydney Crossing Signal Box, the Harbour Branch had a flat crossing here with the Chepstow line. Apparently when the GW opened their mainline here, The Severn & Wye Railway insisted on having priority for their harbour line as they were here first. Not sure what Mr Brunel would have thought of his Broad Gauge expresses getting halted here to allow a lowly S&W Harbour train to pass.

Lydney Station.

19/10/2012

Track still in place on the North side Lydney Harbour Branch.
Many thanks to local Tony Comber for pointing out that these rails were probably for cranes that were used to unload timber for the nearby Pine End Works which made Plywood, originally for Mosquito construction during WW2.

Tidenham Tunnel Southern Portal.

Looking North through Tidenham Tunnel.
I think Sustrans may now own Tidenham Tunnel and have ideas of opening it for walkers and cyclists,

19/10/2012

The view from the Southern Portal of Tidenham Tunnel, Netherhope Halt was just through the bridge on the left.
This is one of the most overgrown sections of trackbed I have been on recently, strange considering the track is still laid, yet the ballast and sleepers have done nothing to hold back the growth.

Chepstow Station. The Station Cafe is highly recommended.

19/10/2012

Chepstow Station looking toward Gloucester.

St Briavels Station looking north. Quite intact, overlooking the river.

St Briavels Station.

19/10/2012

St Briavels Station and Goods Shed.

19/10/2012

St Briavels Goods Shed, sadly in poor condition but a very interesting design. presumably the road vechicles backed into the shed and Goods were dealt with on the Dock.
